A wedding celebrant is a formally trained individual who presides over a ceremony but does not have legal obligations to marry a couple, like a priest, for instance.
However, wedding celebrants are fully insured, professionally trained individuals who give couples the opportunity to make their wedding more personal, unique or extra meaningful, as opposed to a straightforward ‘by the book’ civil or religious wedding.
While many couples opt for the traditional route, choosing a registrar or church minister to conduct the wedding ceremony, others choose a celebrant as it’s a great way to have the wedding they want, without limitations as such.
A wedding overseen by a celebrant can be held in a variety of locations such as a field or woodland, a resort, clifftop or the beach – there are so many options to choose from. There are no restrictions on location, neither are there any on music, readings, religious vows or timings. Smart couples are quick to see the sheer personal value and degrees of freedom offered by a wedding celebrant.
Instead of being told how you need to memorise the same generic vows that every couple repeats after the minister/priest, your marriage celebrant will work with you to come up with a completely personalised ceremony, one which resonates with your dream wedding ideas and vision. You could even have certain symbolic elements in your ceremony, including pets if you choose.
A good place to start your wedding celebrants search is online – e.g. looking at their websites, reading what their customers have to say and then giving them a call.
Once you have shortlisted a few celebrants, you should have an in-person meeting to get a feel for whether they are able to do the unique things you want for your wedding.
It’s always worth taking the time to sit down and discuss your dream wedding ideas before making the decision to hire a celebrant. You could be looking for someone a little humorous or solemn, or a little bit of both – this is a good chance to get a good feel for it.
Book your wedding celebrant at least a few weeks in advance and start discussing with them how you want your wedding. He/she will advise, guide and inspire you to have the wedding ceremony you’ve always wanted, exactly how you want it.
With none of the restrictions to deal with that are typically enforced by a registrar or church minister, wedding celebrants are a great way to add that personal touch to your big day.
A professional trained and caring celebrant who knows how to empathise with your needs can help you plan and celebrate your big day in remarkably wonderful ways. In fact, it’s a great way for couples from mixed faith background who want to combine traditional marriage nuptials with rituals of their own.
